To-do lists. I used to be motivated by them and the amazing feeling of checking off the items. Then something happened and they transformed into this anxiety attack. I was no longer in control of the list...it was in control of me. I would start thinking about everything I needed to do and become overwhelmed, some days that overwhelming stress would just shut me down. I would turn to Netflix or to sleep.

I spent hours avoiding necessary tasks by putting them off to the last minute and either not finishing completely or creating subpar work. Many times is resulting in me paying additional fines or not returning items = loosing money. I wasn't standing still, I was rolling down the hill I fought so hard to climb up. This is how I began to question the to-do list and the power struggle that now existed between us.

First was the awareness.

"OMG, I just spent how many hours in avoidance this week?!"

I knew I had control over the list before and I wanted to find a way to get back in control of it again. I had feel into this hole, it was suppressive and depressive and I needed to gain control over my life and stop avoiding. It started with listing out every single thing I want to accomplish. I had lists and lists of things to do that I would easily forget, things from all different categories of my life. So, I started as a mental exercise, with just listing. I allowed my mind to go wild on paper.

I tried many different tactics to utilize that first list. But it all came down to trying to understand how to optimize it, how to gain control over it, to understand it. The list itself did not motivate me. I needed energy and motivation to make it happen. What did I hope to accomplish by completing all these? What is the end goal? What was my why?

I then realized that I needed to understand my list, so I dissected it. The list was a representation of my repetitive thoughts and I needed to understand why I was so fixated on these tasks. And this system is what we practice here: AWARE.
